The River – And the Currency of Learning

It’s Friday night – May 15 –river

and we’re pulling in for a long weekend of camping beside the river.

The sun is shining and it’s gorgeous!

I can hardly believe my eyes …  we get a place to park overlooking the river. WOW!!

We are pumped up for a great time of rest & relaxation …

with a view that is absolutely spectacular!

Storm river

All of a sudden there’s a HUGE change.

The wind starts to blow … it starts to rain … it starts to snow.

And before we know it … we are in the middle of a hailstorm!

And – what a storm! The ground is now covered and is completely white.

The peace and tranquility of the sun-sparkled river has suddenly changed its course.

And how are the kids affected ?

Well … they are jumping for joy … they are seizing the moment … they are running … they are laughing … they are enjoying life!

Day Two. A full day of rain … it continues to rain … well into the evening. Things were not turning out quite as we had planned … yet the kids are thrilled … and dancing as if all the raindrops were “lemondrops and gumdrops” … And the adults … Now what? Change? Adapt? Adjust? … just like we do on a daily basis as school staff working with students …

The next morning – it’s a NEW day … we awake to a beautiful sunrise.  The sun is shining brilliantly on the water … and I hear the river running. It’s a triumphant sound – the sound of water – the sound of current. I enjoy a morning coffee …  grab my camping chair and head to the riverbank. I sit. I look. I listen. I reflect. I enjoy every moment …

You may be wondering –

  • What does this have to do with education?
  • What does this have to do with reflections of a principal?

Well … here are a few of my thoughts around linking a May 24th weekend camping trip by the river with family & friends … to being an educational leader.

First of all … Camping … what does it require?

  • Positive attitude
  • Flexibility
  • Adaptability
  • Teamwork
  • Innovation
  • Improvise
  • Creativity
  • Resourceful
  • Enjoying the simple things in life.

Secondly, the river … what does it require ?

  • Navigating … charting a course …
  • Respect
  • Appreciate its beauty and its power

As I reflect on this weekend … I remind myself of the kids’ reactions to the challenges in weather this weekend … they not only embraced it … but enjoyed it and celebrated it! I ask myself – Isn’t this what we want our kids to be experiencing in their “adventures in learning”?  I say a resounding – YES!

In conclusion, as I wind this blog post to a close … the river is like the  “learning” process. The question is … As educators, how do we respond to the learning process as something that can be so peaceful & tranquil … yet so powerful & mighty ?

My thoughts …

  • Embrace the river
  • The river of Learning
  • The current of learning
  • Learning is cyclical
  • Learning is flow
  • Learning is unpredictable
  • Learning is powerful

And … in Alberta … as we look to bring Inspiring Education to life in our schools … let’s celebrate the possibility that …

Uncharted learning is the currency of the 21 Century learner.
